Johnson Controls Supplies Front Seats With Passive Climate Control, Standard Seats, Batteries, Homelink and Compass for the New VW Passat

Johnson Controls (NYSE: JCI), one of the world's leading suppliers of automotive interior systems, electronics and batteries, is contributing to the high level of comfort in the interior of the new VW Passat with numerous innovative solutions. These include front seats with passive climate control for the driver and front seat passenger - available as an option - as well as the just-in-time production of standard seats. Johnson Controls also supplies the starter battery, HomeLink, the integrated garage door opener, and in the US version of the Passat the electronic compass as well.

Technology with a focus on humans as opposed to what is theoretically possible, ergonomics, and an overall "it all fits together" feeling were the guiding principles in the development of the interior concept for the new VW Passat. The interiors specialists at Johnson Controls fulfilled these requirements by developing the optionally available seats with passive climate control for the first row as well as planning for the just-in-time assembly of some 600 different versions of the standard seats, making it possible for consumers to experience perfection in the details.

Passive climate control for enhanced seating comfort

The climate-controlled front seats, for instance, which are optionally available for the Comfortline, Sportline and Highline versions of the Passat, create a pleasant feeling of well-being. These seats, which remain comfortably dry even in hot weather, are based on Johnson Controls' EcoClimate concept. The seating climate remains at a comfortable level, particularly on long journeys, thus enhancing passive safety. The combination of breathable and moisture-absorbing materials in the seat cushion and backrest ensures that moisture and heat generated by the occupants are transferred into the seat's interior and then gradually released again into the surrounding air.

The result is efficient seat climate control without any need to integrate fans. EcoClimate is able to absorb 80 percent more heat and 300 percent more moisture than conventional seats. For cooler weather, seat heating has now also been integrated into the passively climate-controlled seats for the first time.

"Our intensive development work on all aspects of vehicle interior comfort, along with detailed consumer research, allows us to achieve that little bit extra," said Dr. Reiner Spatke, Vice President and General Manager of the Customer Business Unit VW/Porsche at Johnson Controls.

Convenient electronics ease day-to-day driving

In addition to seating, Johnson Controls also provides other comfort features for the new Passat. For example, the HomeLink integrated garage door opener is available as optional equipment. As in the VW Golf, the system's transmitter is integrated into the sun visor, eliminating the need for a conventional handheld remote. Johnson Controls also supplies an electronic compass specifically for the US version of the new Passat. The controls for the direction finder are located in the rear wheel housing, while the display is integrated into the instrument cluster. Finally, the company also supplies starter batteries for the new Passat, ensuring a consistently reliable power supply.

Volkswagen chose Johnson Controls for its quality products and new technologies. "The occupants of the new Passat will always travel comfortably, whether they select the standard or optional versions of the vehicle," said Dr. Reiner Spatke.
