John Spohn Achieves CPIP(TM) Certification

(TAMPA, FLORIDA, USA) - ISPE, a global not-for-profit association of 22,000 pharmaceutical science and manufacturing professionals, announced today that John Spohn has achieved the Certified Pharmaceutical Industry Professional(TM) (CPIP(TM)) credential, awarded by the ISPE Professional Certification Commission (PCC), an independent governing board within ISPE.

To be eligible for CPIP certification, an applicant must hold a Bachelor's Degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math (STEM), and 5 years of industry experience, or 10 years experience without a STEM degree. Applicants must also demonstrate professional experience and extensive pharmaceutical industry knowledge. After proving eligibility, applicants must pass a rigorous exam covering product development, facilities and equipment, information systems, and other pertinent areas of pharmaceutical industry knowledge.

Spohn has nearly 30 years experience in engineering fields related to the pharmaceutical industry. For the past 10 years, he has been employed by Castle Hill Technologies, most recently serving as Manager of Northeast Operations, where he works full time as a process and automation consultant. In addition to his experience at Castle Hill Technologies, Spohn has worked as Equipment Automation Lead Engineer, Process Control Engineer, and Instrumentation and Controls Engineer for various companies in both the US and Puerto Rico. He holds a BS in Mechanical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York, USA.

"When I began studying for my CPIP credential, I thought that the primary benefit would be to benchmark my knowledge and experience against the emerging industry standard, to see where I should seek and foster growth," said Spohn. "While working through the challenging eligibility process and examination, I realized that the credential certifies not just what a person knows or has done, but also how he or she practices. I believe the CPIP credential is a tremendous benefit for the industry, because it allows people making critical staffing decisions to have confidence in a truly independent certification."

Spohn began studying for his CPIP credential in 2010 as part of the ISPE Boston Chapter's CPIP study group, which was the first study group of its kind in the organization. He has gone on to lead the Boston Chapter's second study group, which concluded in March 2011. "I advise anyone who is interested in achieving a CPIP certification to start or join a study group," said Spohn. "The process of working through the study materials in a group setting enriches the experience. Since each of the professionals in the group will bring their own sphere of experience, the entire group will gain crucial additional learning by interacting with each other."
