International Standard Facilitates Home Networks for Devices, Computers, and Operating Systems

Networks that connect televisions, cell phones, computers, and other devices are becoming increasingly common in the homes of tech savvy families. A new standard published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) provides guidelines for Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) devices to assure compatibility and seamless connectivity.

The guidelines within ISO/IEC 29341, Information technology - UPnP Device Architecture, are categorized into 73 parts that address the various aspects of the technology. Part one details the UPnP device architecture and defines the protocols for communication between controllers - or control points - and devices. Part two addresses basic device control protocol, including a mechanism for products that wish to use UPnP but for which there is not yet an appropriate standard base device type.

Specific device categories are addressed in the remaining 71 parts of the standard, including internet gateways/routers; audio-video media devices; printers; scanners; climate control; lighting and wireless LAN access points; and digital security cameras.

Guidelines for additional aspects of the technology, such as security, remote user interface and quality of service, are also provided in the document.

ISO/IEC 29341 was developed as a result of eight years of collaboration by the members of the UPnP Forum, an industry-led initiative with over 850 members that facilitates connectivity among consumer electronics, intelligent appliances, and mobile devices from many different vendors.

The standard was adopted for publication by ISO/IEC JTC (Joint Technical Committee) 1, Information Technology, SC (Subcommittee) 25, Interconnection of information technology equipment.

The U.S. leads JTC 1, with the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) holding the secretariat and Mrs. Karen Higginbottom acting as chairperson. The Telecommunications Industry Alliance (TIA) serves as the Administrator of the ANSI-accredited U.S. Technical Advisory Group (TAG) to SC 25, carrying U.S. positions forward to the subcommittee. TIA is an ANSI member and accredited standards developer.

"ISO/IEC 29341, together with the already-published International Standards on Home Electronic System (HES) architecture, covers all functions for the intelligent home and provides seamless communications within the home," said Dr. Walter von Pattay, Secretary of ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 25. "This deals with all kinds of entities that are used for applications ranging from building control via communications to entertainment, as well as specifications to control and service the home and its appliances from outside."
