International Standard Guides Assessment for Energy Efficiency in the Building Sector
A new standard published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) promotes energy savings worldwide by providing the building sector with specific design guidelines for assessing energy efficiency.
ISO 23045:2008, Building environment design - Guidelines to assess energy efficiency of new buildings, will assist designers and practitioners in collecting and providing useful data that is required at different stages of the design process, as well as in fulfilling building design objectives, related to energy efficiency. Through adherence to the guidelines, professionals in the building sector will have the opportunity to significantly reduce emissions of carbon dioxide through the energy-efficient design of buildings and building mechanical equipment.
The standard applies to new buildings, as well as systems for heating, cooling, lighting, domestic hot water, service water heating, ventilation, and related controls. It is part of a growing group of ISO standards for building environment design organized within the framework of ISO 16813, Building environment design - Indoor environment - General principles.
ISO 23045:2008 was developed by ISO Technical Committee (TC) 205, Building environment design. This group is U.S.-led, operating under the leadership of Stephen Turner of the Constructive Technologies Group.
"Today's worldwide increase in efforts toward rational use of natural resources is increasing the markets for energy-efficient buildings and building equipment," said Mr. Turner. "The building sector holds great prospects for energy saving through the design of buildings with improved thermal performance and increased efficiency of mechanical equipment, as well of course through the entire range of buildings' lifecycles. ISO 23045:2008 will help the building sector design buildings to a specified level of efficiency."
In addition, the U.S. holds the secretariat of TC 205, which the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) has delegated to the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE). An ANSI member and audited designator, ASHRAE also serves as the U.S. Technical Advisory Group (TAG) administrator for TC 205, carrying U.S. positions forward to the committee.
