The International Organization for Standardization (ISO), the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), and several other international trade and standards organizations co-sponsored a recent conference on the key role of International Standards in Enabling E-business. The meeting was held September 18-19, 2008, in Geneva, Switzerland.
Defined as the use of information and communication technologies (ICT) to support business processes, e-business methods enable companies to efficiently link their internal and external data processing systems, to facilitate interactions with suppliers and partners, and to better meet the needs and expectations of their customers.
Globally relevant standards for e-business are a critical piece of this puzzle, ensuring the interoperability of an organization's systems and processes across national and regional borders. This two-day event sought to advance the public-private partnership for developing and implementing e-business standards. The conference included business cases and individual feedback from public and private-sector organizations that have implemented e-business standards. Participants also discussed the broad range of standards that are currently available, and suggested that more guidance is needed for organizations looking to implement these standards.
Representatives from the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) were on hand to discuss the e-Business Standards Registry Project. Building upon the technology used by ANSI's NSSN: Search Engine for Standards, the prototype registry site allows standard-setting organizations to freely share metadata about the scope, location, and availability of any standards that they have developed for e-business. A joint initiative between ANSI and NIST, the site is expected to increase coordination and collaboration among standards development projects, strengthen existing resources, and foster convergence to common sets of standards. According to presenters Ken Peabody of ANSI and Mark Palmer of NIST, the registry is expected to be a fully operational resource by February 2009.
The event was organized by ISO, IEC, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards (OASIS), the United Nations/Economic Commission for Europe - United Nations Center for Trade Facilitation and Electronic Business (UN/ECE-UN/CEFACT), and the Universal Postal Union (UPU), and supported by the Memorandum of Understanding Management Group on Electronic Business in standardization field (e-business MoU Management Group).
