Oil & Gas Producers supports use of ISO standards.

International Association of Oil and Gas Producers Supports Use of ISO Standards
A new issue of the Standards Bulletin published by the International Association of Oil and Gas Producers (OGP) encourages the oil and gas sector to reference International Standards developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) that address vital oil and gas materials, equipment, and offshore structures.
The oil and gas industry is recognizing the need for standards to assure safety and the importance of a global consensus process in developing these standards. A workshop held by OGP in February 2009 focused on standards and the use of ISO documents in the industry.
"[ISO standards] have helped most of us to realize better returns for our stakeholders, and, more importantly, they ensure that our operations are safe," said Datuk Abdullah Karim, vice president of Petronas in Malaysia, at the OGB workshop.
A new suite of International Standards for the oils and gas industry is being developed by ISO, based on existing specifications, OGP member documents, and other industry input. OGP supports worldwide application of these standards.
Many of the standards were developed by ISO Technical Committee (TC) 67, Materials, equipment and offshore structures for petroleum, petrochemical and natural gas industries. This committee addresses a wide array of industry issues, including drilling, production, transport by pipelines, and processing of liquid and gaseous hydrocarbons.
The American Petroleum Institute (API) serves as the secretariat of TC 67 on behalf of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), the official U.S. representative to the ISO. API - an ANSI member and accredited standards developer - also serves as the ANSI-accredited U.S. Technical Advisory Group (TAG) administrator to TC 67, carrying U.S. positions forward to the committee.
