Press release date: September 24, 2008

Spiralform was presented a Automechanika 2008 Innovation Awards last week in Frankfurt. Spiralform is a new fastening process that allows engineers to assemble products using a 360 degree, eleven-sided forming pattern. The method can be applied to fasten rivets or pre-formed posts/pegs used in product assemblies. Spiralform is an alternative joining process to orbital forming, adhesives, welding and riveting. The process is most suitable for applications involving delicate articles or thin wall, hollow rivets or long shank pegs where it is important that the end result should not be excessively deformed or affected by the forming operation itself.

Typical applications for this method include automotive assemblies, electronic components, white goods, aerospace products and many varied general industrial products.

Spiralform machines are manufactured by the Orbitform Group, a leader in riveting, fastening and assembly machines and solutions. Spiralform is unique because it is the first fastening solution capable of operating in either a "spiral" or "orbital" forming pattern. It is possible to simply choose either technique using the same machine. To change between the two requires only the forming head to be changed which takes just three minutes. This means that the user can now use the same machine for more than one application and, by simply changing the head, increase the range of products that can be fastened together. A variety of machines sizes are available to cater to many diverse product applications.

Importantly, the end user can now invest in just one machine where previously two machines would be required to achieve the same level of production. There is an indirect environmental benefit too since it is no longer necessary to manufacture two machines which saves on raw materials and energy while reducing emissions caused by the machine production processes.

This represents a leap forward in terms of machine versatility and flexibility allowing the user:

o Greater return on investment
o Flexibility to accommodate mid-life product design changes
o Better overall equipment effectiveness (OEE)
o Maximum machine output and capacity
o Floor space reduction (one machine can perform the job of two)
o An environmentally sensitive solution.

In recognition of this, the judges at Automechanika selected Spiralform a co-winner of the 2008 Innovation Award. The award was presented in Frankfurt Messe during the show which ran until September 21, 2008.
