Press release date: May 10, 2007

May 10, 2007, Boca Raton, FL. Imperx, Inc. a leading provider of state-of-the-art digital cameras and frame grabbers, today announced that its Lynx family of Gigabit Ethernet cameras are now fully compliant with the GenCam and GigE Vision interface standards. The GigE Vision compatibility allows the cameras to connect seamlessly with a wide variety of image processing hardware and software over the network while the GenCam compatibility ensures that those systems can fully access the unique features of the Lynx camera family.

The recently-ratified GigE Vision and GenCam standards are the result of an industry-wide effort to simplify the use of cameras in machine vision applications. The GigE Vision protocol facilitates connection to the camera for discovery, image transport, and other basic functions. The GenCam protocol sits atop GigE Vision and calls for the camera to provide an XML-based description of its features and control structure to the vision system. GenCam also defines a common applications programming interface (API) that developers can write to. The result is an ability to create applications software that can use any GigE Vision- and GenCam-compliant camera as though it were generic, while retaining access to the camera's unique features. At the same time, the camera can be used with any compatible vision system without needing additional driver development.

"Achieving this compliance for our cameras will greatly simplify our customer's development efforts," said Imperx president Petko Dinev. "It will also give them immediate access to a wide range of system choices, such as using National Instruments' vision boards running LabVIEW, without requiring the creation of custom software."

"We are delighted that Imperx Gigabit Ethernet cameras are now GigE Vision and GenCam-compliant," said Kyle Voosen, vision product manager at National Instruments. "With GenCam, National Instruments customers can now add Imperx high-performance cameras to the growing list of cameras natively supported in LabVIEW."

About Lynx GigE Cameras

Imperx's GigE cameras are available in either monochrome or color configurations, offering 8-, 10-, or 12-bit pixel data under software configuration control. Electronic shutter control offers features such as pre-exposure and double exposure and speeds as fast as 1/12000 of a second to as long as 10 seconds. The shutters can be triggered under software control or use external trigger signals in addition to providing programmed exposure times. Automatic iris control is optionally available. Users can also control the image output, resolution, frame rate, analog or digital sensor gain and offset, and image area-of-interest using an intuitive graphical user interface or simple ASCII commands. In addition, the cameras provide defective-pixel mapping and built-in gamma correction, also allowing users to define their own look-up tables (LUT). Compliance to the standards ensures that these advanced features are readily accessible to designers.

Software support includes Windows and Linux drivers, development kits for C++ and Visual Basic, and support for a variety of instrument control packages, including LabView, MIL, Image Pro, Halcon, and Video Savant. Software tools for data acquisition and display, camera configuration, and triggering waveform generation are built in. For command and data communications, the cameras are available with an RS-232 port and either a CameraLink® or a Gigabit Ethernet connection. The Ethernet connection allows network-controlled installations using the Internet Protocol (IP).
