ITA Supports Increased Demand for Titanium Welding Training

DENVER, -- Continuing its mission to provide training in critical manufacturing skills, the International Titanium Association (ITA), Denver, CO, will sponsor a one-day workshop: "How to Weld Titanium." The workshop will be held Tuesday, June 26, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., at Edison Welding Institute (EWI), 1250 Arthur E. Adams Dr., Columbus, OH.

The knowledge and execution of proper welding techniques are essential for global competitiveness in the titanium industry. Jennifer Simpson, executive director of the ITA, said individuals wishing to learn how to weld titanium correctly and effectively would benefit from this workshop.

The workshop will discuss various techniques of titanium joining, such as electron beam, laser, MIG (metal inert gas), TIG (tungsten inert gas) and plasma. The primary focus will be on the GTAW (Gas Tungsten Arc Welding), or TIG method, for joining titanium. Attendees also will learn to deal with the challenges of everyday manufacturing in a shop-floor environment.

Four hours of classroom study includes instructions on utilizing correct welding equipment and maintaining a work area needed to achieve a successful titanium weld. The classroom study will review proper welding joint designs, anti-contamination procedures, and how to evaluate and document welding techniques. Three hours of hands-on exercises will follow the full-day workshop. The workshop includes a comprehensive study guide and the DVD "How to Weld Titanium" as part of the registration package.

Specific topics to be covered in the workshop include preparation for welding, cutting and cleaning; setup and correct titanium techniques; post-welding; quality control; stress relieving; and welding safety. Welders should bring helmets and related gear if they want to work on their technique during the workshop. All materials will be provided in class.

Contact Stacey Blicker, ITA's member services administrator (e-mail: sblicker@titanium.org; phone: 303-404-9400) for details on the welding workshop, including registration information. Edison Welding Institute develops and applies technology innovation within the metalworking industry. The ITA (Web site: www.titanium.org) is a non-pro?t trade association established in 1984. The ITA educates members of the titanium industry, fosters the development of new commercial and industrial applications for titanium, and provides a forum for the exchange of ideas within the industry. The ITA furthers its educational mission through annual conferences, workshops and regional seminars. The association's much anticipated event, TITANIUM 2012, the 28th annual conference and exhibition, will be held Oct. 7-10 at the Hilton Atlanta.
