Press release date: January 7, 2011

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) recently released the ISO Strategic Plan 2011-2015 - Solutions to Global Challenges, a roadmap outlining the organization's strategic direction for the next five years.

At the heart of ISO's five-year strategy is the continuing contribution of ISO standards in tackling the growing diversity of interrelated and complex challenges of today's world. From social responsibility to health and food safety, ISO's current portfolio spans more than 18,500 voluntary, consensus-based International Standards impacting virtually all sectors of activity.

The January 2011 issue of ISO Focus+ magazine takes an in-depth look at ISO's Strategic Plan for harnessing the organization's capabilities to reach its potential in the period ahead. The special issue also showcases an exclusive interview with Pascal Lamy, director general of the World Trade Organization (WTO). Mr. Lamy shares his thoughts on the role of International Standards in facilitating trade and the benefits of the WTO trading system.

Divided into seven major objectives, ISO's Strategic Plan was developed following a comprehensive consultation of stakeholders worldwide, including ISO members, users of standards, and international organizations. ISO membership comprises the national standards bodies of 163 countries.

As the U.S. national member body to ISO, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) conducted an online survey and convened a workshop for all U.S. stakeholders to develop U.S. input into the draft ISO Strategic Plan.

During the June 25-26, 2009, workshop in Washington, DC, more than 80 attendees representing standards developing organizations, industry, and government examined the survey responses and ISO's strategic direction in a number of key areas, from technical scope and partnerships to public policy issues and conformity assessment activities. A detailed document of the conference proceedings and presentations is available here.
