Thanksgiving weekend is often considered the busiest travel season for Americans. With millions of families flying, driving, and taking the train, traveling during this holiday often leads to big crowds and extended delays. A new technical specification (TS) released by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) aims to help travelers better plan their trips, leading to a more organized, comfortable and convenient travel experience.
ISO/TS 14823:2008, Traffic and travel information - Messages via media independent stationary dissemination systems - Graphic data dictionary for pre-trip and in-trip information dissemination systems provides a system of standardized codes for existing signs and pictograms that are commonly used to deliver traffic and traveler information (TTI). These codes will facilitate the work of information technology systems (ITS) by standardizing principles and practices, both nationally and internationally.
Through the specification's coding system, on-board units, variable message signs, personal computers, public access computer terminals, and other media systems will display pictorial details that are helpful to travelers, including traffic, parking, and public transportation information. Standardized signs and graphics will allow travelers to easily understand this information, whether in their local train station or an international airport.
ISO/TS 14823:2008 was developed by ISO technical committee ISO/TC 204, Intelligent transport systems. The U.S. holds the chairmanship and the secretariat of TC 204. Michael Noblett of Connexis serves as chairman, and the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) has delegated secretariat duties to the Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA). TIA and the Electronic Industries Alliance (EIA) - both ANSI members and accredited standards developers - jointly serve as the ANSI-accredited Technical Advisory Group (TAG) administrator to TC 204.
