For the first time, the selection of IREC's awardees will be in the hands of the public, with open voting online July 23 to August 15. In previous years, an independent committee of experts reviewed applications and selected winners. The opportunity for a variety of stakeholders and the community at large to vote will bring even greater awareness and acknowledgement of this year's applicants and winners.

"With these awards we recognize innovative solutions to solving tough problems; we salute the ingenuity of those who think outside the box to advance the use of clean energy; and we thank those who inspire others to make a difference," said IREC Board Chair David Warner.

While the awards traditionally focused solely on renewable energy initiatives, IREC recognizes that energy efficiency plays an equally crucial role in achieving a sustainable future. Typically, government, energy industries and educational systems view them separately, with little collaboration between programs. The Closing the Divide Award category seeks innovative examples of initiatives that help "close the divide" between energy efficiency and renewable energy.
