MAG Fadal to Demonstrate Vertical Machining Center Technology For Cutting Aluminum, Titanium and Hardened Steel at IMTS '08

VMCs will demonstrate high-performance capabilities optimized for job shop, mold & die, and aerospace titanium machining

May 2008 - MAG Fadal aims to be VMC Central at IMTS, Sept. 8-13, demonstrating high-performance vertical machining centers optimized for job shop, mold & die, and aircraft/aerospace titanium applications. The VMCs demonstrate cutting capabilities at the MAG Industrial Automation Systems booth A-8218, the largest at IMTS.

Mold machining will be demonstrated on a newly designed VMC 4525 equipped with a 15,000 RPM air/oil spindle and the Infimatic Freedom NC200(TM) control. Tolerances to ±4µm (±0.00016") can be achieved on this machine due to the use of hardened and ground box ways, 40 mm diameter ballscrews and rigid machine design. Infimatic's Freedom NC200 is a digital control, designed specifically for metal-cutting machine tool applications. This powerful CNC enables high-performance cutting and precision with features such as high speed processing, intelligent servos and integrated CAM with advanced graphics, while also promoting ease-of-use and serviceability.

A MAG Fadal VMC 6535 HTX, tooled with special brazed and solid-carbide cutting tools from MAG Maintenance Technologies, will be aggressively cutting titanium through use of a 50-taper, 6,000 RPM high-torque, air/oil spindle delivering 35.8 kW (48 hp) peak power, 600 Nm (441 ft-lbs) peak torque. With X/Y/Z axes travel of 1,651 mm x 889 mm x 787 mm (65" X 35" X 31"), the machine is designed to optimize heavy-duty cutting operations for aerospace, automotive and other applications. Cutting feed rates are up to 15.4 m/min (600 ipm), with rapid travel rates up to 22.86 m/min (900 ipm).

Two machines from the MAG Fadal FX Series will be demonstrated: a VMC 3016 FX (with a 10,000 RPM spindle) and a VMC 4020 FX (15,000 RPM spindle), both powered by the Infimatic Freedom NC200 control. Steel, stainless, and aluminum parts will be cut on the machines at the show. The 3016 FX and 4020 FX are designed with rigid box-way construction for maximum vibration damping operations and Steinmeyer ETA+ dual-mounted ball screws that optimize machine stiffness and virtually eliminate reversal error.

Rapid traverse is 25.4 m/min (1,000 ipm), with a cutting feed rate up to 20.3 m/min (800 ipm). X/Y/Z axes travel on the 3016 FX is 762 mm X 406 mm X 508 mm (30" X 16" X 20"); the 4020 FX increases the working envelope with X/Y/Z axes travel of 1,016 mm X 508 mm X 508 mm (40" X 20" X 20").
