IEEE joins China's CERNET federation.

Press Release Summary:

IEEE expanded its Shibboleth® coverage by joining CERNET federation of China, which is part of CARSI Project, an inter-institutional authentication and authorization project. Shibboleth is standards-based, open source software that enables Web single sign-on across or within organizational boundaries. IEEE's partnership in CERNET federation means that institutional users of IEEE Xplore® Digital Library can enjoy single sign-on access to subscribed electronic resources even if they are off campus.

IEEE Joins China's CERNET Federation

Allows Easier Access to IEEE Xplore® Digital Library by Chinese Institutions

PISCATAWAY, N.J., -- IEEE, the world's largest technical professional association, recently expanded its Shibboleth® coverage by joining the CERNET federation of China. The CERNET federation is part of the CARSI (CERNET Authentication and Resource Sharing Infrastructure) Project, an inter-institutional authentication and authorization project initiated by China's Peking University.

Shibboleth is standards-based, open source software that enables Web single sign-on across or within organizational boundaries. Shibboleth-enabled access to electronic resources simplifies the management of identity and permissions for organizations.

IEEE's partnership in the CERNET federation means that institutional users of the IEEE Xplore® Digital Library can enjoy single sign-on access to subscribed electronic resources even if they are off campus. The IEEE Xplore Digital Library (http://ieeexplore.ieee.org) contains one of the world's largest collections of high quality technical literature in engineering and technology, and provides access to more than three million full-text documents, including journal articles, conference proceedings, technical standards, and related materials.

"This is an important milestone for IEEE as we continue to expand our capabilities to serve our rapidly growing audiences in Asia," said Prakash Bellur, IEEE Staff Director, Platform Design. "It is another way IEEE is making it easier for our global customers to access the content they need for cutting-edge scientific and technical research."

IEEE is a member of several Shibboleth federations worldwide such as DFN-AAI in Germany, RENATER in France, IDEM in Italy, RedIRIS in Spain, the UK Access Management Federation, GakuNin in Japan and others.

The CARSI project is sponsored by China Next Generation Internet Program (CNGI), National High-tech R&D Program of China (863 Program) and National Program on Key Basic Research Project (973 Program).
