IEEE Nuclear Group Conference Visits Electric Machinery - WEG Group in Minneapolis

Atlanta, GA – Attendees of the IEEE Nuclear Group Conference held July 28-30, 2014 had an opportunity to tour the newly remodeled Electrical Machinery Company (EM) manufacturing facility, while attending recent association proceedings in Minneapolis, MN. The group consisted of nuclear plant owners and designers from 15 countries, including:  the United States, Canada, Japan, China, Germany, Sweden, South Korea and Spain.

Visitors represented numerous companies including:  Areva, Chicago Bridge and Iron, Dominion, Duke Energy, Electric Boat, Exelon Generation, GE-Hitachi, Luminant Generation, Sargent-Lundy, Tennessee Valley Authority and Westinghouse.

The group learned about the combined 175 year history of Electric Machinery and WEG along with the capabilities, products, and services offered for the nuclear industry. The group toured the 350,000 (approx.) square footage manufacturing area, and got a first-hand look at the welding, machining, press room, assembly and testing floor equipment and capabilities.

EM’s research and development group presented two projects: the new Sync-Rite™ system and Bluetooth® technology to stream motor rotor data wireless to an external display or laptop computer.  The new controls will be used by plant operations to monitor the condition life of their machines.

EM’s field service department explained their 24-hour global field service for planned and emergency services, which includes, parts/service, advanced testing and engineering, diagnostic services, installation, commissioning and start-up assistance.

Additional discussions focused on EM’s 10CFR50 Appendix B Quality Program, specific patented design and insulation systems, legacy processes and validation practices that lead to lower product life costs and world class reliability.

In the evening, EM hosted the guests on a boat tour of the scenic Mississippi River.

The IEEE NPEC Chair, Mr. George Ballassi, stated “the members of the committee found the experience to be informing, interesting and were much impressed by the company’s capability”.
