Engineering services company Hydratight has been awarded a coveted five-star safety management rating by the British Safety Council.
The achievement, which covers Hydratight's global HQ at Darlaston, has taken the company only three years - remarkable in the often-hazardous oil and gas industries in which Hydratight chiefly operates.
The company, which has 30 locations across the globe, operates stringent safety policies both for office and field workers, with daily safety briefings and every incident subject to review by a senior management committee.
EMEA HSEQ manager, Dave Stout led the company to the BSC's three-star award in 2008, followed by the four-star award last year and now the top-level rating, awarded following arigorous safety audit by BSC specialists, in which the company achieved a 93 per cent score.
The BSC scheme is a globally-recognised, independent audit system used by many leading organisations to benchmark their operations against universal best practice.
The audit concentrates on safety organisation, management control, fire control systems, measurement procedures and workplace implementation.
"We are extremely pleased to have reached this level in such a relatively short time, and well ahead of our schedule," said Dave.
"Since 2005, Hydratight has driven its accident rate down year on year and this award is a reflection of how seriously we take health and safety matters. We fully expect our other UK centres to achieve a similar rating in the next few months.
"It's a credit to the dedication of everyone involved, that we've received this accolade and we are determined to maintain - and even improve on our five-star status," Dave added Hydratight is now eligible to apply for the BSC's highest safety rating, the Sword of Honour - of which only 40 are awarded worldwide each year.
"To receive a sword a company must demonstrate extraordinary competence in managing health and safety risks," said Dave. "There has to be a proven culture of aiming for best practice throughout the entire organisation - which I am pleased to say we have. We are determined to aim for the elite rating next year."
