Press release date: April 21, 2008

THE WOODLANDS, Tex., April 21, 2008 - A new family of Araldite® hydrophobic cycloaliphatic epoxies (HCEP) specially formulated to perform in extreme climatic environments was introduced to the U.S. market today at Huntsman Advanced Materials' IEEE PES Transmission and Distribution Conference and Exposition Booth 123/124.

Araldite® HCEP systems are ideal for the construction and insulation of monolithic instrument transformers, providing an extended service life to reduce inherent costs. Independent testing confirms the excellent tracking and erosion resistance featured in components molded from Araldite® HCEP epoxies. The new products also reduce current leakage, enhance thermal cycle resistance and are rated for NF 16-101/102 flame retardancy. The materials passed the crucial Koeberg Insulator Pollution Test in South Africa and are approved by electric utility companies including ESKOM, EDF and KEPCO.

Also being introduced at the IEEE PES meeting is Araldite® S-HCEP epoxy, a cost-efficient hydrophobic system used to cast sheds for medium- to high-voltage composite insulators. Huntsman's pre-filled, two-component S-HCEP epoxy can be used without pre-mixing, vacuum preparation or primer treatment of the GFR rod. As a result, the new product provides for faster, easier processing than conventional materials while still delivering good tracking and erosion resistance to prolong insulator life.

Huntsman Advanced Materials will highlight its Araldite® non-post cure (NPC) systems as well. The products support the fast processing of medium- and high-voltage equipment, insulators, bushings, switches and transformers without necessitating a post cure after demolding. Customers who use the NPC materials report that typical molding temperatures can be decreased by up to 50ºF (10ºC), reducing demold time by up to 20% for higher productivity. Filler loading can also be increased by up to 65% without negatively affecting cured product performance. Once cured, Araldite® NPC materials exhibit good mechanical properties and thermal shock characteristics.
