Honeywell Selected for Finnprotein Oy's New Multi-Stage Soy Processing Plant in Finland

Experion® PMD R800 to Provide Unified Control for Largest Greenfield Processing Plant in Europe

KUOPIO, Finland, – Honeywell (NYSE:HON) today announced it has been selected by Finnprotein Oy to deliver a unified control solution at the company’s new multi-stage soy processing plant in Uusikaupunki, southwestern Finland. As part of the contract, Honeywell will provide its Experion® PMD R800 solution, as well as project management, engineering, factory acceptance testing and site acceptance testing.

Once complete, the new plant will extract protein and oil from soybeans for animal feed, human food and biodiesel industries in Finland and abroad. Using an advanced multi-stage extraction technology, it will process up to 230,000 tons of soybeans annually, and after the second phase is completed up to 400,000. That makes it the largest facility of its type in Europe and the only full-scale multi-stage soy processing plant in Scandinavia. At peak capacity of the first phase, it will generate net annual sales of Euros200 million a year, serving a European region that has to date relied largely on imports.

“The new plant will tap into an industry that has tremendous potential. With Honeywell’s technology we will have not just the largest but one of the most efficient and advanced soy processing facilities on the continent,” said Ari Kulmala, production director, Finnprotein Oy.

The plant will use Experion® PMD R800 as a comprehensive, integrated solution for process, machinery and advanced controls at all plant control levels. Honeywell’s Experion Process Knowledge System (PKS) will also be used to give operators control of the entire production line in a single automation system.

“With Experion® PMD R800 we are able to offer a truly integrated solution for control of the plant in various locations and production lines that will improve safety, efficiency and reliability,” said Pekka Nevalainen, Honeywell sales manager, Finland and the Baltics.

The solution will also reduce maintenance for Finnprotein Oy and be cost effective to expand as the plant grows: the initial stage will see the plant process 230,000 tons of soybeans per year, while a second stage scheduled for 2016 will see it expand the range of products and increase capacity to 400,000 tpa. The first stage is scheduled to begin production this autumn.
