New modern gasoline turbo technology sets new standards in performance and fuel efficiency

SHANGHAI, April 29 -- Honeywell (NYSE:HON) announced that its turbo technologies are fitted on three world-class gasoline vehicles from BMW launched at the 2009 Shanghai Auto Show, including a world premiere of the Honeywell-boosted BMW 760 Li and Asian premieres of the BMW X6 M and X5 M. These premium turbocharged engines are setting unparalleled performance levels while offering significant reduction in fuel consumption and emissions.

The new BMW 760 Li features a 6L V12 gasoline bi-turbo engine, which delivers a stunning 544hp of power and 750Nm of torque. This engine is boosted by two Honeywell modern gasoline turbochargers (MGT22) situated on both flanks of the V, providing improved performances over a non-turbocharged model (445hp of power and 600Nm of torque) while reducing fuel consumption significantly and meeting Euro5 and ULEV II emissions standards.

The new X5 M and X6 M series are both M 4.4L V8 gasoline bi-turbo engines, delivering 555hp of power and an impressive 680Nm of torque. This engine features two Honeywell modern gasoline turbos (MGT22) situated in the middle of the V, incorporating in its design a "twin-scroll" flow control technology that enhances the driveability and fuel economy of the engine by maximizing the recovery of pulsation energy from the exhaust gas. This is the first time that this flow control technology is used in a V8 engine for a light vehicle.

Honeywell's advanced turbocharging system is also selected to power BMW's new "ActiveHybrid" engine (4.4L V8 407hp) intended for the 7-series and X6 vehicles. This concept combines, for the first time at BMW, a hybrid transmission with an advanced gasoline turbocharged engine and provides a reduction in fuel consumption and emissions of 15% compared with a non-turbocharged combustion engine.

"We are thrilled to be part of these key programs with BMW," says Alex Ismail, President of Honeywell Transportation Systems. "These powertrains are setting new standards in gasoline boosting and places Honeywell and BMW at the forefront of gasoline boosting technology."

In addition to boosting the flagship BMW vehicles at the Shanghai Auto Show, Honeywell turbochargers are also fitted on 15 new vehicles developed by China's biggest carmakers such as Brilliance, Chery, Huatai, JAC Motors, Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (SAIC), and Geely. These domestic launches feature gasoline and diesel engines ranging from 1.3L to 2L, reflecting a growing trend of carmakers in China looking to turbocharged engines for great vehicle performance as well as superior fuel efficiency. Currently, about 10% of new light vehicle sales in China are turbocharged. Honeywell expects that overall turbo vehicle sales in China will double over the next five years, and the company is seeing even stronger growth in turbo gasoline vehicles, whose sales are expected to more than triple by 2014.

As the leading turbocharger developer in the world, Honeywell expects the global turbocharger segment to grow from 30% of the overall automotive market to more than 38% by 2013 as automakers look to boost engines to help increase fuel efficiency and reduce harmful exhaust emissions without sacrificing performance.
