Mobile Computers and Wi-Fi Network Enable Headwear and Handbag Company to Streamline Processes, Improve Inventory Accuracy and Reduce Costs

HOLTSVILLE, N.Y., Sept. 13 / -- Symbol Technologies, Inc. (NYSE:SBL), The Enterprise Mobility Company(TM), and RedLine Solutions, Inc., a systems integrator and value added reseller (VAR) specializing in bar code, radio frequency (RF) and automated data capture systems, today announced that Dorfman Pacific deployed Symbol's rugged mobile computers and Wi-Fi network infrastructure at its 275,000 square-foot warehouse in Stockton, California. RedLine Solutions installed the Symbol enterprise mobility system at Dorfman Pacific, one of the largest full-line headwear and handbag companies in the world, to create a streamlined, paperless warehouse operation that has reduced errors and increased staff productivity and profitability.

Paper-based processes at Dorfman Pacific's warehouse were driving costs of approximately a quarter of a million dollars a year in temporary labor. Dorfman Pacific evaluated wireless-based warehouse management systems (WMS), and chose Symbol Wi-Fi network infrastructure and mobile computers to run picking, packing and shipping applications. Dorfman Pacific's enterprise mobility system enabled the organization to handle approximately double the number of orders during peak order periods; reduce labor costs by nearly 30 percent at its headquarters' warehouse; and provided secure Wi-Fi, allowing mobile workers real-time visibility into business-critical information.

"With the Symbol enterprise mobility system, our warehouse is now entirely paperless, resulting in streamlined warehouse processes and improved inventory accuracy," said Mark Dulle, Director of Information Technology of Dorfman Pacific. "While the return on investment for the Symbol Wi-Fi network came primarily from automating the warehouse in Stockton, a significant bonus will be to extend and deploy a Symbol Wi-Fi network at our new 65,000-square-foot facility in Dallas, Texas; and at the same time centrally manage the servers, applications and network from our Stockton headquarters."

Symbol's rugged MC9060-G mobile computers and VRC6900 rugged vehicle/fixed-mount mobile computers were selected for their ability to withstand the everyday use and abuse in the harsh warehouse environment where hats and handbags are stored and shipped to retail customers. Dorfman Pacific also chose Symbol's WS5000 wireless switches and AP300 access ports to serve as their business-critical Wi-Fi network infrastructure to provide wireless connectivity for the mobile computers.

"Dorfman Pacific's use of Symbol mobile computers and Wi-Fi in a warehouse environment is a clear example of how enterprise mobility can positively affect a company's bottom line," said Gerald McNerney, senior director of Symbol's Transportation, Distribution & Logistics Solutions. "When the warehouse and distribution center are key to your business, you must make operational efficiency a priority. Enterprise mobility helps bring visibility and accuracy to operations, and higher productivity to staff."

Symbol PartnerSelect member RedLine Solutions works with customers to evaluate past processes, and help re-engineer process flows to maximize productivity and automate data collection. RedLine Solutions worked with Dorfman Pacific to integrate products and services to track bar coded products and validate each material movement including: receiving, receiving inspection, put-away, picking and packing, shipment confirmation and cycle counting.

"We believe in deploying leading and innovative products that provide our customers with benefits that help improve business-critical operations and reduce costs," said Anthony Mattos, Senior Account Manager of RedLine Solutions, Inc. "Implementing an end-to-end Symbol enterprise mobility solution with Symbol Wi-Fi network infrastructure is an easy decision to make as customers trust Symbol's handhelds for their durability and ruggedness."
