Following on from the successful Sintering Courses in 2012 and 2013, the European Powder Metallurgy Association (EPMA) has organised an intensive 2-day course on Hardmetals for 2014 (www.epma.com/shortcourse).  The Hardmetals Short Course will take place in Vienna, Austria, 9-11 April 2014.

The Hardmetals Short Course is organised by the European Hard Materials Group (EHMG) of the EPMA with support from its members. The technical course content has been selected by Dr. Leo Prakash and Dr. Steven Moseley.

The two-day course will start with an Overview of Hard Materials (HSS to Diamond) and a History of Hardmetals. Subsequent sessions will include Raw Material Sources, Manufacturing Routes for Raw Materials, Shaping, Sintering, Finishing, Cemented Carbides, Calphad, Dictra for Metallurgical Engineering, Application FE Simulation amongst others.

“The 2014 Short Course will provide an excellent learning opportunity for engineers and scientists with an interest in hardmetals, thanks to the unique combination of high level industrial specialists and academics from across Europe” explained Joan Hallward, Short Course Coordinator. She went on to add “This year’s course will provide unrivalled insights into the practical capabilities and applications of hardmetals as applied to the powder metallurgy (PM) process.”

The participation fee for the 2 day course is Euros695 for EPMA members, Euros795 for non-members and Euros650 for academics or students.  For this non-refundable fee participants will receive 2 nights’ accommodation, (9 and 10 April), all relevant course documents plus refreshments and a Course meal on the evening of 10 April.

An additional feature of this year’s course is a Laboratory Course on 9 April, which will introduce the fundamentals of hardmetal manufacturing, with experience of powders and equipment. The course will focus on the practice of manufacturing for young engineers. The Laboratory Course will be organised by Prof Wolf-Dieter Schubert and will take place at the Vienna Technical University.    The Laboratory Course fee is Euros350 and as space is limited, places will be allocated on a first-come-first-served basis.
