HUD's New Map Application Built on ESRI Technology

GIS Platform Designed for Affordable Housing and Community Development Decisions

REDLANDS, Calif., - The US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Office of Community Planning and Development (CPD) has released CPD Maps, a web application of HUD's enterprise geographic information system (GIS) platform, which is built on Esri's ArcGIS system. Esri is the world's leader in GIS.

CPD Maps is a component of HUD's eCon Planning Suite, a set of tools designed to help state and local government grantees make better decisions about affordable housing and community development.

"This technology that we're providing is going to be really revolutionary in helping all our grantees work smarter," said HUD secretary Shaun Donovan.

HUD's enterprise GIS platform makes applications, geospatial services, and data available to HUD staff, grantees, and customers, as well as federal, state, and local agencies. CPD Maps is the flagship application on this platform. It includes several features, such as detailed reporting, dynamic thematic mapping, and multivariate querying, that are supported by shared REST services that can be leveraged by other applications on the HUD enterprise GIS platform.

ArcGIS for Server enables HUD to create, manage, and distribute GIS services to its staff through the HUD platform. Using ArcGIS API for Flex, HUD creates easy-to-use custom web applications for local and state grantees as well as the public.

To support government transparency and informed public participation, HUD built a map application that locates programs and projects. Moreover, the platform provides a portal for sharing GIS information with other federal agencies such as the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
