HP and Intel design challenge elevates creativity through technology on Lifetime Television's hit series

NEW YORK, Sept. 8, 2011 - HP today announced it is pushing the boundaries of fashion and technology integration with a first-of-its-kind team design challenge from HP and Intel that aired tonight on Lifetime Television's Emmy® Award nominated "Project Runway."

For the first time in the history of the series, designers were asked to produce a comprehensive runway show by creating one-of-a-kind patterns and garments as well as a video backdrop to accompany the production. Designers worked together in groups to create a cohesive collection, merging their design aesthetics and the unique fabrics they designed on HP TouchSmart desktop PCs.

"Once you see the vision in your head, eyes and heart, today's designers can translate their dreamland through computerland. The challenge allowed designers to use amazing products to bring their creativity to life - starting from pattern to collection to fashion show. I'm so excited to see the results," said Betsey Johnson, fashion designer. "Thanks to HP for creating this challenge and for helping designers get to their vision."

In this episode, HP video cameras were used to produce films that became a visual backdrop for the judged runway show. HP TouchSmart desktop PCs allowed designers to create individual patterns and edit video footage using effects such as kaleidoscope to add visual intrigue. The pocket-sized HP Veer smartphone kept teams connected on the go throughout the challenge.(1)

"This challenge gave me the opportunity to demonstrate my cohesive design vision by contributing to everything from the original fabric pattern to the video production. Using innovative technology allowed me to elevate my work and ultimately brings me one step closer to creating a collection for the tents at New York Fashion Week," said Anya Young Chee, winner of the HP and Intel design challenge.

"The HP and Intel 'Pattern Making' episode has become a 'Project Runway' staple, with last year's challenge winner, Mondo Guerra, using bold plus-sign fabric to create one of the most emblematic garments of the series," said Lance Still, executive vice president, Promotions and Integrated Marketing, The Weinstein Company.

HP has been on the forefront of fashion and technology since its unveiling of the HP Mini Vivienne Tam "digital clutch" notebook PC, followed by relationships with other fashion trendsetters, such as "Project Runway" and "Sex and the City 2."

Technology on the show

This season, "Project Runway" designers also use the latest HP EliteBook Tablet PCs with second-generation Intel® Core(TM) i7 processors to create winning designs. Trading up for this digital sketchpad allows designers to use a pen or touch technology to create custom designs for each challenge in unlimited colors and styles, and make modifications with ease.

The winning designer of season nine will receive a $50,000 prize package from HP and Intel to create his or her own vision and run a business.

Online and on the runway

"Project Runway" fans can visit the HP and Intel Brand Boutique on www.mylifetime.com/hp to learn about an array of technology and tap into their inner creativity. Fans also can participate in the "On the Runway Sketching Challenge" with guest judge Mondo Guerra from season eight.

For more design entertainment, tune into Designer Showdown, a digital design series featuring four young designers competing to create fashionable garments using the latest HP technology. The designer who wows the judges panel - made up of celebrities and fashion veterans - and wins the series will have the opportunity to pitch designs to industry pros and take home a suite of HP technology.

In addition, HP is extending the runway fashion experience to enthusiasts at home with Mall World, a virtual-reality game featuring designers and the HP technology seen on the show. Users can shop the latest designs in the virtual store or relive the challenges with a virtual fashion show. Additional information is available at www.facebook.com/hpplay. About "Project Runway"
