Press release date: February 19, 2008

February 19, 2008. Chicago, IL - Global Material Technologies, Inc. announces today the results of a 10-month study of the effectiveness of its Xcluder GEO (TM) anti-burrow material. Xcluder GEO is a stainless steel fiber-based geotextile designed to be installed in landscaping applications where animal damage is prevalent due to digging or burrowing activities. The test installation was performed in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, a New Orleans suburb. Parish officials agreed to test the material along a canal embankment where nutria, a large aquatic rodent, had been responsible for ongoing damage. Nutria burrow into sloping land for shelter and tear up grass to feed on the tender roots. Bare ground and burrows lead to erosion and slope damage, particularly when severe weather, such as a hurricane, brings rising water levels and large volumes of runoff.

Jefferson Parish personnel installed the geotextile, on a canal bank, over a 14-foot wide by 100-foot long area, starting at the water line and extending up the slope. A thin layer of soil was placed over the material and then grass was seeded on the soil. The site was then monitored for signs of nutria activity as well as for re-growth of grass. Jefferson Parish officials report that grass readily took root in the installation area and the bank has been restored to its pre-installation appearance. Additionally, no nutria activity has been observed in the treated area since the installation. Based on these and other field trial results, GMT has introduced Xcluder GEO to the market as a permanent preventive measure to control animal damage to landscaping and civil engineering projects.
