Gerdau Ameristeel Receives Statewide Award for Corporate Philanthropy


Charlotte Mill Wins North Carolina International Community, Economic Development Award

CHARLOTTE, N.C., Nov. 29 / - Gerdau Ameristeel's Charlotte Steel Mill is the North Carolina Department of Commerce's 7th Annual International Community and Economic Development Award (NCICEDA) winner in the medium company category.

North Carolina Secretary of Commerce James T. Fain said, "These companies have embraced the North Carolina communities in which they do business, and this award is designed to applaud their civic and philanthropic contribution. It is important to recognize the role they and their employees play in making our state a better place to live."

The award is presented by the North Carolina Department of Commerce to foreign-owned North Carolina companies that demonstrate noteworthy corporate philanthropy and volunteerism.

"Charlotte is a great community with many organizations that deserve our support," said Mike Mueller, vice president, mill operations. "It is an honor to be a part of a company that is a good steward and therefore fortunate enough to contribute to the surrounding community."

Gerdau Ameristeel has been a major part of the Charlotte community for 46 years and has maintained a strong presence in the volunteer and charitable giving efforts in the area. Some their most notable efforts include, Habitat for Humanity, Adopt-a-Highway and post Hurricane Katrina support in New Orleans.

The Charlotte mill's history and impact on the community were also key determining factors with this year's selection committee. Members of the eight-member NCICEDA selection team visited the mill to personally meet with employees, conduct interviews and receive a mill tour. Gerdau Ameristeel was selected from a large pool of applicants which varied in industry and size. Selection criteria were divided into four key areas including:

o success and recognition of the business' community service programs
o executive leadership's commitment to community service
o corporate mission statement and values, as they relate to community service
o employee participation and service involvement in the local community
