W. CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa., 12 January 2009-ASTM International has presented the 2008 Charles B. Dudley Medal Award to Dr. George E. Totten, president of G.E. Totten & Associates LLC in Seattle, Wash.

The Dudley Award commemorates ASTM's first president, honors research that leads to standardization and extends knowledge in a field of interest to the Society, and recognizes meritorious contributions to Society publications. Totten received the award for his work as editor of the ASTM publication, Manual 37, Fuels and Lubricants Handbook: Technology, Properties, Performance and Testing.

A fellow of ASTM International, Totten has been an active member of ASTM Committee D02 on Petroleum Products and Lubricants since 1988, and he currently serves as member at large on the main committee and leads the groups on non-lubricating process fluids and fire-resistant fluids. He also works on ASTM Committee G02 on Wear and Erosion and is a past chair of the ASTM Committee on Publications. D02 has recognized Totten's contributions with several awards, including the ASTM Award of Merit, an Award of Appreciation, an Award of Excellence and the D02 Sydney D. Andrews Scroll of Achievement.

An expert in the fields of quenching of steel and aluminum and fire-resistant hydraulic fluids, Totten is a research professor in the Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering at Portland State University, Portland, Ore., and is a visiting professor at the University of São Paulo, San Carlos, Brazil. Before founding his research and consulting firm in 2001, Totten spent 31 years at Union Carbide Corp., where he was a senior research scientist working in areas such as metalworking quenchants, hydraulic fluids and lubrication fundamentals.

A fellow of SAE International and ASM International, Totten is also a member of the American Chemical Society, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and the Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers. He is the author of more than 500 papers, articles and books, and he holds 16 patents.

Totten, who received his Ph.D. in physical organic chemistry from New York University, New York, N.Y., also holds a B.S. and an M.S. in chemistry from Fairleigh Dickinson University, Teaneck, N.J.
