General Cable Sponsors Symposium on Aluminum: History, Technology and Conservation


HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, KENTUCKY – General Cable (NYSE: BGC), sponsored the first conference on “Aluminum: History, Technology and Conservation” in Washington, D.C., April 7 -11, 2014. The three-day symposium and workshop was presented by the Foundation of the American Institute for Conservation (FAIC), the International Council of Museums Committee for Conservation (ICOM-CC) Metal Working Group the Emil Buehler Conservation Laboratory at the National Air and Space Museum Steve F. Udvar-Hazy Center, and the Lunder Conservation Center at the Smithsonian American Art Museum and National Portrait Gallery.



The conference featured presentations on the history, production, fabrication and use of aluminum including a presentation by John Weritz of The Aluminum Association on “Aluminum – A Modern Metal with Historical Importance.” Other lectures and presentations addressed the topics of materials characterization and identification; the conservation and use of aluminum alloys in contemporary art; and coatings, surface treatments and corrosion inhibition.

The interdisciplinary meeting brought together specialists from the fields of conservation, scientific research and industry to facilitate the exchange of knowledge and expertise in the conservation and preservation of aluminum alloys in art, aircraft, architectural structures and museum artifacts, and included a two-day workshop on the identification of aluminum alloys and finishes.
