Gases and Welding Magazine Highlights Young Professional

Mike Gunnels measures performance at Indiana Oxygen Company.

Dewitt, NY: As part of its continued commitment to highlighting the best and brightest young minds in the gases & welding industry, the June issue of GAWDA Edge features an article written by Indiana Oxygen Company Operations Manager Mike Gunnels. The article is entitled "Leading a Team to Success" and chronicles Gunnels' journey in the gases and welding industry.

Gunnels served in the U.S. Army for ten years, working his way up to the rank of captain. He came into the gases and welding industry through a recruiting firm that specializes in pairing officers with companies in the private sector. Gunnels came into the industry with no knowledge of gases or welding. Gunnels turned to those around him to help him learn. "My colleagues were highly experienced, and they were always more than willing to help me learn," he says. "I absorbed everything I could by watching and listening to what they had to say. I seized every opportunity I could to further my training."

One of Gunnels' roles at Indiana Oxygen is facilitator of the company's continuous improvement program, or "War on Waste." Through the program, Gunnels organizes teams to break down every aspect of the business and look for ways to make it more effective. Gunnels says, "You have to measure your progress in order to achieve your goals; otherwise, you'll simply be 'spinning your wheels.'" From gas cylinder fill rates and missed or inaccurate deliveries to customer complaints, no facet of the business is exempt from scrutiny.

Through the company's War on Waste, Gunnels has facilitated some big improvements at Indiana Oxygen. To find out what they are, head over to www.gawdaedge.org and check out the latest issue of GAWDA Edge, the online resource for young professionals in the gases and welding industry.
