GarrettCom's Substation Routers Now Support MPLS-Based Carrier Services

DynaStar Routers and Software Offer Substations an Easy Transition From Dedicated WAN Networks to More Cost-effective Multi-protocol Carrier Services

FREMONT, Calif., Feb. 1 -- GarrettCom(TM) Inc.'s new software release for the DynaStar(TM) line of substation-hardened routers extends the reach of the newer generation carrier data services that are based on MPLS (Multi-Protocol Label Switching). Incorporating support for MPLS carrier services, the new DynaStar OS 7.4 software release enables substation planners to take advantage of new MPLS-based carrier services that often offer more cost effective, flexible and secure networking for distributed sites, especially those with a requirement for peer-to-peer communications. Using DynaStar Substation Routers with the new DynaStar software release, network designers for power utility substations and other distributed industrial sites will be able to terminate MPLS-based services in locations with extreme, harsh environments where commercial-grade, general purpose networking products would be likely to fail. The new software will be demonstrated for the first time at DistribuTECH in San Diego, Calif., Feb. 4-6 at GarrettCom's booth, # 1810.

The new DynaStar software extends secure, prioritized management of critical SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) traffic to MPLS-based services, enabling a common network for SCADA traffic along with video surveillance, remote provisioning and other substation applications. Thus, power utilities can migrate from current frame relay network implementations to MPLS-based Private IP services now or in the future without changing substation networking devices.

GarrettCom's DynaStar Routers integrate IP routing and security, serial device services, Ethernet(TM) switching, and WAN access in a family of substation-hardened networking products. DynaStar Routers are widely deployed in dedicated digital wide-area networks with frame relay service, providing advanced SCADA Frame Forwarding features that effectively isolate and prioritize critical SCADA traffic from other network applications.

"Being able to ensure priority treatment for critical SCADA traffic is a prerequisite for moving to integrated networking for substations," said Howard Linton, GarrettCom's Director of Applications Engineering. "The DynaStar substation routers will now let customers deploy multiple applications reliably to substations while taking advantage of the most effective carrier services for each location, either frame relay or MPLS-based IP."

Specific features of the new DynaStar MPLS-based services feature set include SCADA QoS queuing and traffic shaping, DiffServ-compliant priority marking, border gateway routing, and enhanced Serial-IP multicast/multi- master. These capabilities are included as standard features in DynaStar OS Release 7.4 for DynaStar IFR, XFR and NIS products. Other new features in DynaStar 7.4 include additional security provisions to facilitate NERC cyber security compliance, Source-Based Routing and Load Balancing to enhance traffic engineering for high bandwidth applications such as video surveillance over wide area networks, and enhancements to the DynaStar embedded Protocol Monitor that enables remote trouble shooting and analysis of multi-protocol networks.
