General Motors Chairman & CEO Daniel F. Akerson to Keynote SAE International World Congress Annual Banquet



WARRENDALE, Pa., -- Daniel F. Akerson, Chairman &CEO of General Motors, will deliver the keynote address at the sold out SAE International 2011 World Congress Annual Banquet, on Thursday, April 14, at Cobo Center's Riverview Ballroom.

The theme of the SAE 2011 World Congress is "Charging Forward Together." The theme elicits not only enthusiasm, but a willingness as a community to expand the industry's knowledge as a team. "Charging Forward Together" highlights the importance of continuing the evolution of automotive propulsion technology and energy efficiency-- as well as representing the continued recovery and progress in the auto industry.

General Motors is host company for the SAE World Congress, which runs April 12-14 at Cobo Center; LG Chem is the Tier One Strategic Partner.

Akerson became GM Chairman on Jan. 1, 2011, after serving as CEO since Sept. 1, 2010. Prior to joining GM, Akerson was a managing director of The Carlyle Group and the head of global buyout. He joined the GM board of directors on July 24, 2009.

Prior to joining Carlyle, Akerson served in several key roles at MCI Communications Corporation, including executive vice president and chief financial officer, and later president and chief operating officer, formulating and executing MCI's global strategy.

Akerson's work history includes:

-- General partner of private equity firm Forstmann Little & Company, during which time he served as Chairman and CEO of General Instrument Company;

-- Chairman and CEO of Nextel Communications Inc.; and

-- Chairman and CEO of XO Communications Inc.

In addition to serving on GM's board, Akerson also serves on the Boards of the American Express Company and the U.S. Naval Academy Foundation.

He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy with a bachelor's of science degree in engineering, and earned a master's of science in economics from the London School of Economics.
