GE Offers a Spiraling Array of Color-Temperature Options for Household Lighting

CLEVELAND-Homeowners who haven't embraced energy-efficient compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) have another reason to give them a second look: an expanding variety of CFLs that empowers consumers to fine-tune the look, feel and functionality of rooms and spaces throughout the home.

"Some people would be surprised to learn that GE offers five distinctly different types of energy-efficient CFLs for general lighting, each with a unique color temperature that can satisfy virtually any functional requirement or decorative approach," says Brian Sroub, chief marketing officer, GE Lighting.

Color Temperature Options
GE's Energy Smart® CFL bulbs-daylight, soft white, cool white and sunshine-are ENERGY STAR®-qualified and last up to 10 times longer than standard incandescent bulbs. GE Reveal® CFL bulbs produce clean, beautiful light® and are rated to last 8,000 to 12,000 hours (that's seven to eleven years at three hours of use per day), which is eleven times as long as standard incandescents.

GE Energy Smart® Daylight CFLs offer bright, white light at 6500 Kelvin. The 20-watt bulb replaces a 75-watt incandescent while providing 1,200 lumens (vs. 1,170 for the incandescent) and 12,000-hour rated life (eleven years based on the rated life and three hours of use per day).

GE Energy Smart® Soft White CFLs are ideal for soft, warm light. A 13-watt bulb replaces a 60-watt incandescent, featuring 825 lumens (vs. 840 for the incandescent) and 10,000-hour rated life (nine years based on the rated life and three hours of use per day).

GE Energy Smart® Cool White CFLs offer cool light that enhance blues, greens and grays. The 10-watt bulb delivers 550 lumens and a 12,000-hour rated life (eleven years based on the rated life and three hours of use per day).

GE Energy Smart® Sunshine CFLs have a color similar to midday sunlight. A 20-watt bulb offers 1,235 lumens and a rated life of 8,000 hours (seven years based on the rated life and three hours of use per day).

GE Reveal® CFLs mimic traditional Reveal® technology, producing light that enriches colors. These bulbs are available in a variety of wattages and rated to last 8,000 hours (seven years based on the rated life and three hours of use per day).

Understanding Light Output and Quality
For the best comparison between incandescents and CFLs, consumers should look at lumens when finding replacement bulbs. Light output is actually identified in lumens, which is a measurement of brightness. GE provides this type of information on CFL packaging for easy confirmation that a bulb delivers the right light output for a space.

CFLs use less wattage, produce less heat and have a longer life than standard incandescents. While a regular incandescent bulb uses heat to produce light, a CFL creates light using a far more energy-efficient method-four to five times more efficient. This means that a 13-watt CFL can produce about the same amount of light as a 60-watt regular incandescent bulb. As a result, GE Energy Smart® and Reveal® CFLs will actually pay for themselves in energy savings within a year in most cases.
