GE Healthcare and Varian, Inc. Announce Pre-Clinical Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) System

PALO ALTO, Calif., May 12 / / - GE Healthcare (NYSE: GE) and Varian, Inc. (NasdaqGS: VARI) announce the availability of the Discovery(TM) MR901, a new pre-clinical 7T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system which provides new capabilities for a broad range of research objectives.

The Discovery MR901 combines GE Healthcare's state-of-the-art diagnostic technology with Varian's leading scientific platform to provide a pre-clinical MRI system for the scientific community. The pre-clinical technology aims to excel in soft tissue contrast and non-invasive techniques, including those used in research for anatomy, metabolism, and physiology in research models.

"Our offering provides a new level of depth and versatility to the scientific community," said Jim Davis, Vice President and General Manager of Magnetic Resonance, GE Healthcare. "This introduction provides the opportunity to strengthen our footprint within clinical research while complementing our existing portfolio."

The range of preclinical MRI applications includes brain and organ imaging, tumor assessment, disease progression and functional imaging. Other potential research applications include investigation of new contrast mechanisms and agents, monitoring gene expression, analysis of protein interactions, and determination of pharmacokinetics.

Varian and GE Healthcare announced the Discovery MR901 at the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine (ISMRM) conference in Honolulu, Hawaii. The first unit is ready for shipment pending completion of the customer site.
