Multi Level Secure (MLS) systems can be deployed on single 3U VPX computing platform

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA, OCTOBER 19, 2009 - GE Fanuc Intelligent Platforms, a unit of GE Enterprise Solutions, today announced the availability of Wind River VxWorks MILS Platform 2.0 on the company's VPXtreme3 SBC310 3U VPX single board computer and two other leading edge SBCs. The MILS architecture enables applications with different data security levels, or data from different domains, to co-exist securely on a single hardware platform. The availability of VxWorks MILS Platform on GE Fanuc's SBC310 allows complex, sensitive, highly secure systems to be deployed in applications and environments where small size, low weight and minimal power consumption are prerequisites.

Wind River VxWorks MILS Platform 2.0 responds to the growing requirement for MLS (Multi Level Secure) and CDS (Cross Domain Solutions) applications in which data with varying levels of security - such as top secret, secret, confidential and unclassified - can be processed securely on a common hardware platform. Historically, such applications would have been deployed on multiple hardware platforms - one for each level of security - linked by security-compliant channels, but the VxWorks MILS Platform enables deployment on a single platform, providing significant savings opportunities in space, weight, power, and cost. Its availability on GE Fanuc's SBC310 enhances this opportunity while broadening the range of environments in which such systems can be deployed.

"The requirement is growing for military embedded computing solutions that are smaller and lighter in weight, so that they can be deployed in space-constrained environments such as unmanned vehicles," said Peter Cavill, General Manager, Military & Aerospace Products at GE Fanuc Intelligent Platforms. "As these vehicles become increasingly capable of being autonomous - able to complete a mission unaided - the requirement exists for them to handle data of greater complexity and sophistication. The combination of the SBC310 and Wind River VxWorks MILS Platform facilitates this new breed of highly demanding application."

Availability of VxWorks MILS Platform 2.0 was also announced for GE Fanuc's VPXtreme6 SBC610 6U VPX and PowerXtreme PPC9A 6U VMEbus single board computers, enabling MLS/CDS applications that require more fabric interconnect flexibility and bandwidth provided by VPX in its 6U format and the rich I/O and legacy compatibility of VMEbus.

"Companies responsible for defense, networking, industrial, and other infrastructure systems worldwide are demanding ever increasing functionality and secure and safe operation with very high assurance of protection from intentional or inadvertent threats or errors," said Marc Brown, vice president of marketing and strategy, VxWorks Product Division, Wind River. "The Wind River VxWorks MILS Platform delivers the security foundation that aerospace and defense companies need to meet the secure, real-time operating system requirements for high robustness, multilevel secure systems." The Wind River VxWorks MILS Platform is currently in evaluation by the National Information Assurance Partnership (NIAP) for conformance to the Common Criteria Evaluation Assurance Level (EAL) 6+ / NSA High Robustness under the Common Criteria Evaluation and Validation Scheme (CCEVS), which evaluates information technology (IT) product conformance to the Common Criteria international standard.
