Press release date: July 26, 2007
HOUSTON, TEXAS-July 26, 2007 - GE Energy will provide Southern California Edison (SCE) with five GE Energy LM6000-PC Sprint® aeroderivative gas turbine generator sets at five different existing sites in southern California.
The turbines will be used as peaking units in response to extreme hot temperatures and a record energy usage that exposed a shortfall in SCE's generation capacity.
The simple-cycle LM6000-PC Sprint gas turbine generator sets are rated at 49 megawatts each and are equipped with wet emissions control combustors. Natural gas will serve as the only fuel source. GE Energy supplied all necessary balance of plant equipment, including the emissions control modules, black start generators, fuel filters and compressors.
The LM6000-PC Sprint aeroderivative gas turbines were manufactured at the GE industrial aeroderivative gas turbine facility in Cincinnati, Ohio, and the overall package construction and testing was conducted at the GE Energy packaging facility in Houston, Texas. The gas turbines are expected to begin commercial operation during the summer of 2007.
"The extremely hot summer in 2006 led to Governor Schwarzenegger calling upon SCE to initiate a fast track process to have generation online for the 2007 summer," said Charles (Chip) Blankenship, general manager of GE Energy's aeroderivative division. "It was a natural fit for the LM6000 to be selected based on its proven track record of serving California industrial, municipal and utility customers with over 50 LM6000s installed to date."
SCE is one of the nation's largest electric utilities, serving a population of more than 13 million via 4.7 million customer accounts in a 50,000-square-mile service area within central, coastal and southern California.
GE Energy's aeroderivative division is a leading supplier of aeroderivative gas turbines and packaged generator sets for industrial and marine applications. The company provides power-generating equipment to utilities, industries and marine fleets throughout the world. It is also the world's largest and most experienced aeroderivative gas turbine service provider.
