From the Football Field to the Gases and Welding Workplace

Gases and Welding magazine highlights the accountability of Bear Bryant.

Dewitt, NY - With the college football season underway, GAWDA Edge, the premiere magazine for young professionals in the gases and welding industry , turns to legendary football coach Bear Bryant for a bit of advice. As part of its continued commitment to helping young professionals further their careers in the industry, the August issue of GAWDA Edge features an article written by Larry Johnson entitled "The Wisdom of Bear Bryant."

Paul "Bear" Bryant was one of the most successful college football coaches in history, and accountability was a major part of his success. Bryant's coaching philosophy reflected his accountability: "If anything goes bad, I did it. If anything goes semi-good, then we did it. If anything goes real good, then you did it. That's all it takes to get people to win football games." According to Johnson, Bryant's strategy on and off the football field can be used in the workplace. For managers in the gases and welding industry, this team-first mentality can yield positive results.

While Bryant's philosophy can be rewarding, it is also challenging. Johnson says, "Taking the heat and giving the credit are sometimes easier said than done." And while Bryant publically took the blame, he did not let his players off the hook. "I'm sure Bear Bryant conducted an 'interesting' practice session after a severe loss, especially if his team was not trying hard enough," says Johnson. "But to the outside world, Bear Bryant always took the heat."
