Fujitsu Releases Packet ONP for Building 100Gbps Ultrafast, High-Capacity Networks for the Japan Market

Tokyo, Dec 14, 2011 - The expansion of mobile broadband led by smartphones, and the utilization of information and communication technology (ICT) such as cloud computing and sensing have resulted in the ongoing proliferation of Internet traffic. This has mean that telecom carriers must expand their facilities and increase power consumption. It is therefore essential that telecom carriers make efforts to cut network equipment and operations costs, and to conserve energy.

To tackle these issues, Fujitsu will release a packet optical networking platform, or Packet ONP. This platform employs the latest digital coherent technology with DP-QPSK (Dual Polarization-Quadrature Phase Shift Keying) optical modulation to enable ultrafast optical transmission speeds of 100Gbps x 80W over long distances. In the first half of this fiscal year, Fujitsu successfully conducted field trials at transmission speed of 100Gbps in North America. Adopting these technologies will work to strengthen Fujitsu's FLASHWAVE 9500 multiplexed optical transport platform which is widely deployed in the global market. Moving forward, Fujitsu will make available its Packet ONP, integrated with WDM technology for optical transmission, to the domestic Japan and overseas markets.

Fujitsu's Packet ONP makes it possible to construct a single platform for an optical transport network that previously was comprised of multiple systems. The Packet ONP platform is IT infrastructure that can flexibly respond to needs that arise with increasing levels of traffic, the reduction of costs and energy conservation.

Packet ONP features:

o Ultrafast, high-capacity optical transmission performance

Packet ONP uses digital coherent technology with DP-QPSK optical modulation to boost the optical signal distance by digitally compensating for waveform distortions. Each optical fiber has a transmission capacity of up to 100Gbps x 80W for ultrafast, long-distance transmission. In addition, Packet ONP obviates the need to determine the optical fiber characteristics or to have decentralized design - formerly a necessity when constructing a network or conducting maintenance operations - making it possible to reduce construction and maintenance costs.

Digital coherent technology with DP-QPSK optical modulation were developed under the "R&D on High Speed Optical Transport System Technologies" and the "High-speed Optical Edge Node Technologies" project supported by Japan's Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC).

o Modular architecture to support cost reductions and energy conservation

The Packet ONP platform employs a modular architecture that enables flexible assembly of WDM and packet transmission features over an area of application. Compared to conventional configurations comprised of multiple systems, this makes it possible to reduce interface and other equipment costs and to monitor and manage in an integrated manner - contributing to reduced equipment and operation costs and to cut power consumption.

o Highly reliable network

The Packet ONP realizes high reliability with OUPSR (Optical Unidirectional Path-Switched Ring) that enables high-speed switchover to back-up lines in under 50ms in the event of network failure. A mesh network also makes trouble isolation possible with CDC (Colorless/Directionless/Contentionless) function, which allows for discretionary selection to channel through up to eight circuit routes.

o Highly reliable and scalable packet transport

Packet ONP adopts the MPLS-TP packet transfer method compliant with international standards. Its redundancy switchover function offers low latency and eliminates instantaneous outages for not just 1Gbps or 10Gbps, but for 100Gbps interfaces as well. This means the realization of a high capacity, highly reliable packet transport network. Moreover, packet processing is modularized according to switch capacities ranging from 400Gpbs to 3.2Tbps so as to respond to a variety of network areas and to be able to adapt to system conditions.

o Contribution to the environment

Fujitsu promotes eco-design principles throughout the Fujitsu Group and is committed to improving the environmental performance of products through their entire life cycles.

The amount of electricity consumed and CO2 emissions generated by the Packet ONP during operation per unit of output performance is more than 60% lower than Fujitsu's previous products. It is a top-level product in terms of such environmental factors as energy conservation, 3R (reduce, reuse, and recycle) design and technology, absence of specified hazardous chemical substances, and use of environmentally friendly materials and technology.

Fujitsu plans to begin shipments of Packet ONP in the fourth quarter of 2012. Pricing will be quoted individually based on requirements. Target sales over the next three years are 6,000 units.
