Fujitsu Introduces New 4-Mbit FRAM as a Non-Volatile Memory Substitute for SRAM in Industrial, Printer, Medical Design

Battery-free Solution Reduces Cost of Development and Ownership in a Wide Range of Systems

SUNNYVALE, Calif. – Fujitsu Semiconductor America today added to its industry-leading family of ferroelectric memory products with the new MB85R4M2T, a 4-megabit FRAM chip that can replace standard SRAM in industrial machinery, office equipment, medical devices, and other equipment.

The new MB85R4M2T retains data without the need for a battery, enabling systems that require less space, less power, and less cost. The mounting area for memory and related components on PCB boards can be reduced by 50 percent or more because no battery is required. This also reduces the cost of parts and maintenance, lowering total cost of ownership.

The MB85R4M2T allows random access, so developers can make use of any part of the memory bank easily, as required. The fast writing speed minimizes the data loss in cases of power failure, a significant advantage for applications where production or quality data is critical.

Non-volatile FRAM products like the MB85R4M2T significantly reduce power consumption for data retention because FRAMs consume zero electricity when off. The back-up battery in SRAM, by comparison, requires 15 microwatt per-second power current to retain data in memory when the main power is off.

Can Substitute for SRAM

The 4-Mbit MB85R4M2T's 44-pin TSOP package and parallel interface are compatible with standard SRAM memories, so the chip can substitute for SRAM in many applications.

Availability

Packaged in a 44-pin TSOP, sample quantities of the new 4-Mbit MB85R4M2T will be available in January 2014. The new chip represents the latest advanced FRAM offering from Fujitsu, the industry leader in FRAM technology. The company, the first semiconductor manufacturer to establish an embedded FRAM process and the first to embed FRAM into CMOS logic, has a large portfolio serving global customers. Fujitsu is committed to providing customers with memory products and solutions that help increase performance and reduce total costs in end products.
