W. CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa.–A symposium on Mechanical Properties of Frozen Soil will be held Jan. 31, 2013, at the Hyatt Regency Jacksonville in Jacksonville, Fla. Sponsored by ASTM International Committee D18 on Soil and Rock, the symposium will be held in conjunction with the committee’s standards development meetings.

The symposium will provide a forum for exchange of ideas on current research on the testing of mechanical properties of frozen ground. A key objective is to identify new opportunities for standards and specifications that will facilitate construction on frozen soils as well as utilization of natural resources in frozen soil conditions. Parties who should attend include:

• Geotechnical engineers and researchers interested in northern engineering projects such as infrastructure, buildings, pipelines for petroleum industry.
• Agency representatives from Departments of Transportation, Forest Service, Departments of Natural Resources and U.S. Army Cold Regions Research Laboratory (CRREL).
• Mining engineers in Tarsands tailings research in Northern Alberta and diamond open pit mining in Northern Canada, as well as engineers dealing with freezing technologies in potash shaft sinking through water bearing strata.

Online registration opens approximately eight weeks before the symposium and closes Jan. 23, 2013. The attendance fee for ASTM members, presenters and session chairs is $275 USD for online registration and $300 USD on site. The fee for non-ASTM members is $300 USD online and $325 on site.
