With the latest advances in network and processor technologies, it is now possible to provide solutions to many of the most demanding multiaxis motion control applications with a distributed architecture, reducing cost and increasing scalability and flexibility. Traditionally, high end motion control systems for testing and inspection machines in the semiconductor, FPD, PCB assembly, and life science industries have been implemented with a centralized or custom developed control architecture because of the need to handle the high degree of synchronization and determinism needed in the processing of real time multi-axis control data. Modern technologies such as deterministic software based PC control, real time industrial Ethernet (EtherCAT), and multi-axis network drives have enabled more powerful control systems to be designed at a fraction of the cost and effort.
