Former Speaker of the House Gingrich Says Thousands Petitioning for More U.S. Oil Drilliing

In Radio Interview, Gingrich Says America Has Huge Untapped Energy Reserves

WASHINGTON, D.C., June 16, 2008 - On this week's "America's Business with Mike Hambrick" radio program and vodcast, Chairman Newt Gingrich of the American Solutions for Winning the Future nonpartisan group highlights the group's petition drive calling for more domestic oil exploration. The former Republican Georgia congressman and former Speaker of the House says America has huge, untapped reserves of oil as well as coal. As of today, about 800,000 people had signed the online "Drill Here. Drill Now. Pay Less." petition.

WHO: Newt Gingrich

Chairman of American Solutions for Winning the Future

Former Georgia congressman and former Speaker of the House

Gingrich on America's untapped energy reserves:

"Well, we believe that the American people deserve to have the least expensive energy possible in an environmentally sound way and in a way that strengthens national security. And we believe that means that you have to be committed to using America's own resources. Today we have 27 percent of the world's coal reserves, more than any other country by a big margin. We have in the Rocky Mountains three times the oil reserves of Saudi Arabia in shale oil. We have an unknown potential offshore in the Atlantic, Pacific and eastern Gulf of Mexico where it's been illegal to look for oil. The fact is there is a lot of American sources we could be using."

Thousands of Americans are signing the American Solutions for Winning the Future's online petition that calls for more energy exploration, Gingrich says:

"We're very excited by our petition drive 'Drill Here. Drill Now. Pay Less.' at americansolutions.com. In less than three weeks it has gotten 475,000 signatures. We're adding 30,000 to 50,000 signatures a day now. So it's building momentum. And as people hear about it all over the country the number of people coming to American Solutions is going up every single day. And frankly, when people look at you and say we have oil in the Rocky Mountains and we're not using it. We might have oil in the Atlantic and we're not going after it. We might be able to bring down the cost of energy by doing things here at home and the politicians won't let us. They're just incredulous. They think the country can't be this dumb."
