Press release date: June 13, 2011

As water professionals convene at AWWA ACE11, June 12-15 in Washington D.C., they will be looking for answers to challenges such as aging infrastructure, capacity, and regulatory requirements. In booth #1947, Siemens will exhibit a range of technologies and aftermarket services that can help municipalities meet these challenges, including: innovative technologies that either remove, or help to prevent, the formation of disinfection byproducts; retrofit and rehabilitation services; and aftermarket support and automation systems.

At AWWA ACE, Siemens presents the new AquaCarb CX series of coconut shell-based activated carbons, designed for surface water treatment. Some other products and services that will be featured at the conference include: Memcor membrane systems, using the Clearlogx chemical control system to reduce the formation of disinfection byproducts while also safely removing cryptosporidium and giardia; Trident package systems that can be easily retrofitted into existing basins to expand capacity; Link2Site systems that allow remote monitoring, to reduce labor and chemical costs while improving operating efficiency; automation products for everything from single remote lift stations to the largest water treatment automation system -- seamlessly communicating with both the process and the supporting electrical systems.

Siemens will highlight its aftermarket/retrofit/rehabilitation and Guaranteed Performance-based solutions and services at the show. As funding for new plants and major plant upgrades continue to be an issue for many municipalities, Siemens' aftermarket solutions and Guaranteed Performancebased solutions are ways that water treatment plants can remain in compliance. Siemens provides spare parts and equipment that treatment plants need to properly maintain, repair or upgrade their existing facility. The Guaranteed Performance-based solutions provide a funding vehicle for water treatment plant improvements. Siemens can conduct a comprehensive review of the plant's water treatment equipment and controls, as well as current operating procedures and data, and provide a detailed report with recommendations for improving the water treatment system's performance.

Some of the municipalities that have relied on Siemens to meet water quality needs and keep their plants running longer include Dallas, Pennsylvania, Amsterdam, New York, and Maui, Hawaii. The Huntsville Water Treatment Plant in Dallas, Pennsylvania converted its existing heavy media upflow clarifiers to the Microfloc Adsorption Clarifier from Siemens, resulting in dramatic reductions in clarifier turbidity levels and a 40% increase in plant capacity. The City of Amsterdam, New York had aging filter systems that had been unable to meet effluent water quality treatment goals.

Disinfection by-product precursors and low pH were key problem areas. The City installed seven Trident systems in concrete basins, and the filter effluent quality is now meeting turbidity and pH requirements. Maui County, Hawaii has one of the longest running Memcor drinking water systems in the world. Scheduled process audits by Siemens are one reason for the system's optimized performance and long life. The audits, performed at least once a year, help to identify and correct any changes in raw water quality, and therefore, loss in performance.
