Multilingual Web View Illustrates Clean Energy and Sustainable Design Efforts
SAN JOSE, Calif., and FLUSHING, N.Y., June 13 /- Fat Spaniel Technologies, the leading provider of critical information services for distributed renewable energy systems, today announced that it will provide a Web-based energy and weather monitoring solution including highly visual touch-screen displays for the new Queens Botanical Garden Visitor & Administration Center. The new 15,830-square-foot center, powered by geothermal and solar energy, is among the first buildings in New York State designed to achieve the highest national standard for sustainability, the platinum LEED(TM) (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) rating from the U.S. Green Building Council.
Fat Spaniel's Web-based educational displays take visitors on a comprehensive virtual tour of the building's many green design features in Chinese, Korean, Spanish, and English. Central to the Fat Spaniel solution for Queens Botanical Garden are the building's renewable energy systems, which harness clean power from both solar electric and geothermal sources. Visitors are invited to navigate through an educational experience that highlights the design and function of the entire clean energy system, from SMA America's solar inverters to real-time solar irradiance and wind speed, all with a just a few touches of the screen.

"The Fat Spaniel design team worked with Queens Botanical Garden to develop a series of lush, dynamic and informative Web views that make the educational component of the center as compelling as the sustainable design elements of the gardens themselves."

The Fat Spaniel display will also illustrate Queens Botanical Garden's pioneering energy efficiency and green building efforts within the visitor center, which include motion sensor activated lights, efficient ventilation, a waste-reducing graywater system and a multifunctional green roof that merges architecture with landscape. In addition, the educational displays employ engaging imagery to educate visitors about the broader sustainability issues relating to the Garden such as the urban heat island effect, native plant species, sustainable wood and construction materials, and construction waste management.
The Queens Botanical Garden's touchscreen exhibit was funded by Con Edison, Inc., KeySpan, Corp., and the Hudson River Foundation's New York City Environmental Fund. The photovoltaic system was installed and financed by the New York Power Authority with additional funding from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA). The photovoltaic contractor for the project is altPOWER, Inc. The entire project is made possible through the leadership of New York City's elected officials along with other funders.
