FDA Commissioner to Speak at 2010 BIO International Convention



Commissioner Hamburg to headline FDA Town Hall

WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner Margaret Hamburg will be a featured speaker at the 2010 BIO International Convention being held May 3-6 in Chicago. She will headline the FDA Town Hall and speak at a session on the Obama Administration's bioscience and biosecurity priorities.

"I look forward to hearing Commissioner Hamburg's insights into the direction of regulatory policy under the Obama Administration, as well as her views on the challenges, needs and priorities at the FDA. Her remarks will be invaluable to attendees as they work to navigate FDA approvals for new therapies and products," said BIO President and CEO Jim Greenwood.

During the May 5 FDA Town Hall (10:00 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.), Commissioner Hamburg will discuss topics such as preparations for PDUFA V (Prescription Drug User Fee Act), drug safety and transparency initiatives and other key FDA organizational and policy developments. Additionally, Commissioner Hamburg will participate in a May 5 (8:00 a.m. - 9:00 a.m.) panel discussion entitled, "Bioscience and Biosecurity Priorities of the Obama Administration." During the event, she will discuss strategies for advancing the benefits of the life sciences, improving U.S. and global biosecurity and addressing challenges posed by life sciences research.

Other members of the Obama Administration who will participate in the 2010 BIO International Convention include:

David Kappos, Director of the U.S. Patent Office and Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property, who will speak at the May 3 intellectual property super session, entitled "Leveraging IP to Spur Global Biotechnology Innovation, Investment and Jobs," which will examine the role that intellectual property systems play in attracting biotech investment and how some countries are successfully leveraging their patent policies to foster economic growth.

Regina Benjamin, US Surgeon General, will deliver the keynote address at a May 3 Diversity in Biotechnology Summit taking place during the Convention.
