Press release date: January 28, 2013

ETTERS, PA- FCI, a leading manufacturer of connectors and interconnect systems, has received recognition from Electronic Design with a 2012 Best Electronic Design Award for its shield-less AirMax VSŪ cable assembly. The AirMax VSŪ high-speed internal cable assembly was recognized as an innovative product within the Components category by the Electronic Design editorial staff.

Developed to meet the needs of datacom applications that require I/O systems with reliable highspeed data transfer and rugged cable retention, the advanced AirMax VSŪ cable assembly delivers excellent signal integrity (SI) performance at data rates of up to 10Gb/s. The shield-less AirMax VSŪ design features an optimized air dielectric between adjacent conductors to simplify the grounding structure while reducing cost and weight. The AirMax VSŪ high-speed internal and external cable assemblies support among others, Infiniband QDR applications while delivering linear board signal density that exceeds other high speed I/O offerings such as SFP+, QSFP+ and CXP.

"We rely on the expertise of our editorial staff and contributing editors to ferret out the 'best' of the various new technologies, products and standards that we have seen and wrote about throughout this past year," said Joe Desposito, editor-in-chief at Electronic Design. "We congratulate FCI on continuing to develop innovative technologies and products deserving of a 2012 Best Electronic Design award."

The AirMxVSŪ cables mate with either right angle or vertical board headers and are retained via passive latch retention. The 26 AWG internal cables are constructed using four differential pair per column configurations in both eight- and 10-column counts. External cable assembly solutions are configured using the same four-pair per column base configuration while integrating customer defined requirements relating to cable retention and EMI system termination. The combination of EMI braided shield and a snakeskin dielectric outside jacket allows for significantly tighter bend radius capability than conventional external raw cables with extruded jackets.

"The AirMax VSŪ high-speed internal cable assembly is the best available I/O option in the industry, particularly when linear signal density is a key design consideration, for rack-to-rack cabling and box-to-box cabling in data communication and telecommunication hardware. We are extremely pleased and proud of the fact that the editors at Electronic Design have recognized the AirMax VSŪ cable assembly & IO system as a Best Electronic Design in 2012," said Jerry Yi, High Speed Cable Assembly Product Manager at FCI.

FCI's HSIO product portfolio also includes a complete offering of industry standard I/O systems such as SFP+, QSFP+, CXP and mini-SAS / SATA, and mini-SAS HD form factors. These offerings include board connectors, cages, copper cables as well as active optical cables and transceivers.
