Press release date: April 27, 2006

JAPAN--April 27, 2006--ExxonMobil's affiliate in Japan, Tonen Chemical Corporation, announced today that microporous film production capacity has been increased by more than 50 percent at the Nasu Plant to satisfy strong demand and high growth in the lithium ion battery separator market.

"This investment is the third in a series of expansions supporting Tonen's leading separator supply position with electronics companies and battery manufacturers. The Nasu production facilities were previously expanded in 2004 to meet strong demand in the markets for handheld battery-powered devices," said Jim Harris, Polymers senior vice president, Exxon Mobil Chemical Company, a division of Exxon Mobil Corporation. "The added film lines enable us to pursue potential demand growth for customers developing new-generation lithium ion batteries for hybrid vehicles."

ExxonMobil's affiliate, Tonen Chemical Corporation, commercialized and produces a thin, polyethylene-based, porous film that is used as a separator in rechargeable lithium ion batteries used in small electronics such as cell phones, laptop computers and digital cameras. The film is thin, yet strong, helping to increase the stability and reliability of lithium ion batteries. Its homogeneous pore structure provides exceptional performance that maximizes battery safety. The film closes its pores if excessive heat is generated during the chemical reaction in the battery stemming the flow of lithium ions between the anode and cathode. This minimizes the potential for short circuits and battery rupture.

ExxonMobil Chemical is a global leader in technology, product quality and customer service, with petrochemical manufacturing and/or marketing operations in more than 150 countries around the world.

Tonen Chemical Corporation is a leading supplier of separators for lithium ion batteries. The company's product was adopted for the world's first commercial lithium ion battery in 1991.
