Emerson Servo Drives Solve Manufacturer's Pressing Issues

Unidrive M700 servo drives are primary driving mechanism in new fastener installation press

MINNEAPOLIS, MN – Emerson Industrial Automation, a business unit of Emerson (NYSE: EMR), today announces that PennEngineering, a global leader in fastening solutions, has selected Emerson’s new Unidrive M servo drives for use in the company’s newest servo-driven PEMSERTER® fastener insert press. Working closely with their local Emerson representative, Emerson personnel and outside contractors, PennEngineering’s PEMSERTER team of engineers has designed a new-generation press that allows machine operators to install fasteners while holding the work piece and ensures the system delivers accurate forces with both force and limit distances.

An early fastener insert press design was powered by an air-over-oil system. The next generation press converted to an electronic system based on the desire to offer greater flexibility with respect to changeover and feeder options, and to increase cycle rates. This system was controlled by Emerson Unidrive SP drives.

The newest press design upgrades to Unidrive M servo drives to deliver a RoHs II-compliant system, a key requirement in Europe, one of PennEngineering’s primary markets. Scheduled for release in 2014, the new press design includes two Unidrive M drives and two servo motors to control one linear device. The drives enable and disable the motors on the fly to transfer control from one motor to the other with seamless motion control. PennEngineering’s patented new ISS feature automatically detects and calculates ideal pressing forces up to 16,000 lbs. based on a proprietary algorithm.

Over the years of doing business together, PennEngineering’s PEMSERTER group has built a strong working relationship with its local Emerson representative. As the concept for a new press design began to develop, PennEngineering included Emerson in the initial discovery phase to see if the application was feasible. As the design process moved forward, The PEMSERTER team of engineers worked closely with Emerson and several outside contractors to develop the hardware and software requirements for the new press. Ultimately, it was Unidrive M’s onboard Ethernet and capability to integrate machine logic and motion control without the need for a PLC that tipped the scale in choosing Unidrive M.
