BiOS / Photonics West 2013, Booth #8917, Moscone Center, San Francisco,

CA - OFS, a leading designer, manufacturer and supplier of innovative fiber optic products will present a paper entitled "Effects of sterilization methods on key properties of specialty optical fibers used in medical devices," at the SPIE BiOS/Photonics West Conference Saturday, February 2, 2013.

"Optical fibers with different types of polymer coatings were exposed to three sterilization conditions: multiple autoclaving, treatment with ethylene oxide, and treatment with gamma rays." Explains Dr. Stolov, the author of the paper. "The effects of different sterilization techniques on key optical and mechanical properties are reported. Primary attention is given to the behavior of coatings in harsh sterilization environments," he continued. The following four coating/buffer types were investigated: (i) dual acrylate, (ii) polyimide, (iii) silicone/PEEK and (iv) fluoroacrylate hard cladding/ETFE.
