Press release date: May 15, 2007

The global cosmetics and personal care market has seemingly limitless growth potential. As wellness and beauty have become priorities in the lives of many consumers, nearly every segment of the personal care market has responded by creating a vast range of products for every need. Because of the intense competition in the personal care market today, brand owners are constantly looking for ways to differentiate their products to attract and retain customers.

A Fresh Approach

Eastman Chemical Company, based in Kingsport, Tenn., is a $7.5 billion global company with decades of expertise in technologies that have the potential for tremendous value creation in the personal care market. The company brings its core technology platforms and expertise to the market, and then works in close partnership with leading global brands to tap the potential of these technologies for new products. We call it Innovating from the Core - and that's' just the beginning.

Growth from the Core

Eastman's core technology offerings include active ingredients, delivery and time release systems, polymers and functional film formers, and adhesion promoters. Today, the company is focusing on two core platforms for the personal care market:

Polymers and Functional Film Formers

Polymers and functional film formation provide a platform for personal care products to better seal and protect skin and hair from aging and damaging elements in the environment such as UV rays and pollutants. Eastman's advancements in film formation also allow longer-lasting color in cosmetics, water-resistance in moisturizers and sunscreen, and gloss and sheen in hair care products.

Delivery and Time Release Systems

Time release and active delivery technologies allow active ingredients to be released into hair, skin and even the air at a controlled rate or over a sustained period of time, extending the functional life of a product on the body. These technologies will continue to revolutionize therapeutic personal care treatments. They allow moisturizers and conditioners to continually release active ingredients, enabling, for example, deodorants to stay fresh throughout the toughest days, hair gels to keep their hold, and fragrances to linger longer.

Eastman's ingredients for cosmetics and personal care are already creating value in the marketplace:

o Eastman AQ polymer: achieves longer lasting water-resistant films, o Sustane SAIB: adhesion promoters that improve the wearability of cosmetics, o NutriLayer: natural, powerful active ingredient for topical skin care treatments derived from non-GMO rice bran oil. NutriLayer acts as an antioxidant and forms a protective barrier that locks in moisture and blocks UV induced photo-aging.

Eastman is harnessing its technology platforms in four main areas of beauty and personal care:

o Sunscreen to offer a waterproof effect, film formation, active dispersions and an SPF boost. o Color Cosmetics to offer transfer resistance, gloss, adhesion, pigment dispersion and a waterproof effect. o Hair Styling to offer moisture resistance, enhanced gloss, curl retention, low tack and viscosity control. o Skin Care to offer moisturizing, anti-aging, soothing and smoothing with natural ingredients

Looking Forward and Innovating with Eastman

The potential for innovation starting from Eastman's core competencies touches nearly every segment of the personal care market. Eastman continues to work with partners to develop new products that will help leading hygiene, cosmetic and personal care brands gain and/or keep their competitive edge.
