Electrical Safety Foundation International Awarded Fire Prevention and Safety Grant

ROSSLYN, Va., August 10, 2009-The Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI) has been selected as one of 149 organizations that will receive one of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) awards for the Fiscal Year 2008 Fire Prevention and Safety Grant (FP&S).

Each year, thousands of people are injured and killed because of electrical fires and hazards. ESFI's objective is to educate children and families nationwide about electrical and fire safety in the home.

"Educating children about how to recognize and avoid common electrical dangers will empower them to lead safer lives," explained ESFI President Brett Brenner. "With the funding offered through this grant award, ESFI will be able to engage in the development and delivery of messaging and materials designed to fill a documented void in national public safety education."

To that end, ESFI will focus on communicating critical electrical fire safety messages to a wider audience and continue to provide valuable community education support to U.S. fire service professionals, educators and key stakeholders with an interest in electrical safety and a desire to enhance local fire safety outreach efforts. One way the foundation plans to communicate these safety messages is through a series of dynamic educational resources, including lesson plans and interactive online tools.

FP&S grants are part of the Assistance to Firefighters Grants and are under the purview of the Grant Programs Directorate in FEMA. FP&S grants support projects that enhance the safety of the public and firefighters from fire and related hazards. The primary goal is to target high-risk populations, firefighter safety and mitigate high incidences of death and injury.

ESFI is dedicated exclusively to promoting electrical safety in the home, school and workplace. Founded in 1994 through a joint effort between the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA), Underwriters Laboratories Inc., and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, its mission is to reduce electrically-related deaths and injuries through public education that keeps electrical safety top of mind.
