EPA's Principles on Chemicals Management Mark Important Step

The National Association of Chemical Distributors (NACD) welcomes U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Lisa Jackson's announcement of the agency's principles earlier this week on reform of the Toxic Substance Control Act (TSCA).

NACD President Chris Jahn said, "These principles are the first step in an important debate about the future of chemicals management in the U.S. We are pleased that the use of risk-based standards and sound science are top among the EPA's goals. NACD looks forward to working with EPA, Congress and other stakeholders on the details of TSCA modernization legislation that will result in greater protection of human health and the environment while allowing for continued chemical industry innovation."

NACD represents 240 chemical distributors, employing 20,000 individuals, and who serve approximately 750,000 customers each year. NACD's membership represents 85% of the chemical distribution facilities in the nation and more than 90% of the industry's gross revenue. Members of NACD operate in every region of the country and in Mexico, Canada and Puerto Rico through more than 1,500 facilities.

NACD's membership includes small businesses as well as regional and national companies. Annually NACD members deliver approximately 5.3 million chemical distribution shipments, are responsible for 72 billion pounds of delivered product, and drive close to 175 million miles while distributing chemicals.

NACD and its nearly 250 members have established themselves as leaders in health, safety, security, and environmental performance through implementation of the Responsible Distribution Process (RDP), established in 1991 as a condition of membership in NACD. Incorporated as a condition of membership in January 1999, NACD members undergo third-party on-site RDPV - RDP Verification. For additional information, visit NACD's Web site - www.nacd.com.
